Fast and the Flurriest Vermont companies create sleds that push the limits

Nathan North is 12, not yet old enough to drive a car, but certainly able to hit record speeds on Lincoln Gap Road, where he whips his sled around hairpin turns and sweeping curves on the snowy pass. “This thing’s like a Ferrari,” said 46-year-old Steve North, Nathan’s father. “You can carve through turns and it feels like you’re going 100- miles per hour.” Nathan and his family are part of a winter sport re-invented by a new generation. Gone are the days of hardware-store sleds with uncomfortable seats. Cheap foams and plastics have been replaced by aluminum and ergonomically designed mesh seating. Changeable skis allow sledders to maximize the ride on any type of snow, from fresh powder to smooth, packed snow. One sled features “unbreakable” polyurethane and the extreme sports version of a safety belt, which strap legs to the sled. ...
