New Mad River Rocket Sleds for Fayston School

By Francis Moran

With a grant from the Mad River Valley Recreational District, children at the Fayston School are enjoying the pleasures of winter recess periods with new Mad River Rocket sleds.

The tri-town Recreation District awarded the Fayston School PTO an $800 grant for playground improvements.

“Planned playground improvements outlined in the grant application included new soccer goals, new soccer balls, repair to the tetherball game, and plastic covers for the swing chains,” said Fayston PTO member Dori Ross.

“Responding to the requirement for new toboggans the Mad River Rocket Company made a generous contribution to the school by supplying ten new rockets at a significantly reduced cost,” Ross said.

“We’re very happy to give back to the community especially kids,” said Mad River Rocket Company vice president Jesse Rennau. “And I’m particularly excited about it because I went to the Fayston School and I remember sledding during recess and how fun recess was and fun it is to get new gear and equipment,” Rennau said.

The Mad River Rocket Company delivered the toboggans to the school last week to a very enthusiastic audience of over 100 students. The school’s toboggan hill has long been a favorite site on the playground during the winter months.

"Now recess enthusiasm has a whole new meaning to the children at the Fayton Elementary School now as the children run out to get first dibs on these high tech sleds," observed Ross.

When the children saw the new rocket sleds for the first time they were so excited, and cheered or screamed out, ‘this is awesome!’

The Fayston Elementary School, located on German Flats Road, provides a pre-K to Grade 6 curriculum. The school mission statement supports the belief in creating a unique and cooperative atmosphere involving the students, staff and community of the Fayston Elementary School.

"A positive and flexible environment guides students to develop individual and social responsibility. The individualized and goal-oriented curriculum enables students to develop critical thinking skills and creative expression," said Ross.

The Fayston PTO provides ongoing support and the coordination of fund-raising efforts for the school.

Projects for 2004/05 include continued support of enrichment programs, the mobile computer lab, the Artist-in-Residence program, the purchase of Dorothy Canfield Fisher awarded books to supplement the library, and a contribution to the winter sports program.
